A collaboration with Kyushu University to enhance transparency and quality

July 7, 2025 - News

Kyushu University and Calyx Global have launched a research collaboration aimed at improving transparency and reinforcing sustainability in the carbon credit market. Kyushu University’s Urban Institute is globally recognized for its sustainable finance and ESG research.

The carbon market has gained attention as a key tool in combating climate change. But over the last few years, transparency, integrity issues and a lack of buyer confidence have plagued the market. However, this story, often heard in the media, does not answer a key question – do companies that choose higher-quality credits also have stronger ESG performance?

Calyx Global is excited to partner with the highly respected Kyushu University, who will be working to answer this question by understanding how the quality of carbon credits correlates to corporate performance, market valuations and ESG performance.

“There remains a significant gap in understanding corporate use of carbon credits. We're proud to collaborate with Kyushu University’s Urban Institute to help them answer important questions that can drive more effective climate action,” said Calyx Global Co-founder, Duncan van Bergen.

This research collaboration is led by Professor Shunsuke Managi, Director of the Urban Institute, and Associate Professor Alexander Ryota Keeley of the same Institute as the world’s first joint study to clarify the relationship between Calyx Global’s carbon credit ratings and corporate ESG performance.

Calyx Global’s over 950 GHG and 450 SDG ratings span a broad view of the market, representing everything from nature-based reduction credits to engineered removals.

Professor Shunsuke Managi said “In conducting our study, it was vital to rely on the most trustworthy dataset available—and that meant partnering with a reputable ratings agency. Calyx Global impressed us not just with the breadth of their carbon credit ratings, but with the remarkable depth and rigor of their assessment methodology. Their thoughtful, multilayered approach made them a natural choice for collaboration.”

Both Calyx Global and Kyushu University hope this research contributes to the continued improvement of carbon credit quality and fosters a more trustworthy carbon market.
