Financial Independence Policy

We believe carbon credit ratings should be guided by science, not financial interest. For the market to grow, it must be built on a bedrock of trust and confidence. That means there should be no question about our incentives as we evaluate projects—which is why we have established strict rules and governance to prevent conflicts of interest.

Our commitments

1. We do not accept payments from project developers to rate their carbon credits.

Calyx Global does not charge developers to rate their projects. We believe that even the impression of undue financial influence can introduce uncertainty and undermine the credibility of the market as a whole. Instead, we choose which projects to rate based on demand and data availability. We believe this policy is foundational to our ability to focus on the science and speak freely about the overall quality of the voluntary carbon market.

2. We do not buy or sell carbon credits.

Our role is that of a neutral observer. We're here to provide a clear, unbiased picture of quality in carbon markets, not make money from transacting credits.

3. We do not take commissions or fees tied to the transaction of credits.

We publish rating, supply, and pricing data so buyers of carbon credits can make informed choices about the highest quality credits available to them. We never profit from transactions. This means buyers know they are getting our unbiased view of credit quality.

Independent expert panels

Calyx Global's ratings frameworks are reviewed and endorsed by three independent panels consisting of experts in:

  • Greenhouse gas accounting
  • Sustainable Development Goals
  • Environmental and social risk

Each expert signs an agreement that includes a conflict of interest policy. In particular, they must disclose to Calyx Global any actual or perceived conflict of interest with respect to their duties as panel members and recuse themselves if there is a conflict of interest related to the decision being made within the panel. You can see current panel members here.

Financial transparency

You can see our Funders and Investors here.

Our revenue comes from subscriptions to our ratings platform and advice to carbon credit buyers on the GHG integrity, risks and social benefits of carbon projects as part of their due diligence process.

Please reach out to learn more about our commitment to financial independence.

Calyx Global re-evaluates this financial independence policy annually to account for possible changes in regulatory environment, oversight of project development, and potential conflicts of interest.
