Easily find carbon credits eligible for rightsizing

Thursday, 25 Jul 2024

Calyx Global introduced rightsizing last year, launching our first efforts in partnership with oneshot.earth, who created a rightsized portfolio. Since then, we’ve worked with additional organizations to rightsize carbon credits that overstate their claims, and are now making it easier for Calyx Global Platform users to identify which projects are eligible for this initiative.

What is rightsizing?

Calyx Global has identified projects that only suffer from “over-crediting” risk. In such cases, we identify the number of additional credits necessary to compensate for the overstated claim. A buyer can purchase and cancel the additional credits to ensure their emissions are properly offset. To be eligible for rightsizing at Calyx Global, a carbon credit must perform well on all other aspects of quality, including additionality, permanence, and the avoidance of double counting.

Why rightsize?

Rightsizing is a temporary measure to help expand the availability of higher quality credits in a supply-constrained market. The conservative approach helps a company that makes offsetting claims. It also helps accelerate the market “correction” that we are seeing today by mopping up credits that do not represent a tonne of CO2e avoided or removed. We are hopeful that, as methodologies improve, the need for rightsizing will wane and, ideally, disappear.

The rightsizing tag on the Calyx Global Platform

Calyx Global has added a “Rightsizing” tag to indicate that a project is eligible for rightsizing. Users can search for and view such rightsizing-eligible projects. This set of projects tend to include landfill gas, cookstoves and biodigesters. Over 100 projects have this tag to date. As Calyx Global is always in pursuit of bringing our customers more high quality carbon credit options, this number will continue to increase. Platform users can find more information on this tag by clicking the “Learn more” button on the tag within the platform.
